In the early 1800s Bumpō published three woodblock-printed books which contained pictures of a variety of objects, including plants and animals. One of these books, entitled Kimpaen Gafu (i.e., Picture Album by Kimpaen) and published in 1820, included only plant and animal pictures. The six pictures of birds and six of the twenty-four pictures of flowers in this book are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Bumpō was affiliated with a school of artists now known as Maruyama-Shijō. Their drawing style blended the idealism of Chinese art with the realism of European art to create a new, uniquely Japanese style of art.
